The Department of Commerce finalized a $225 million CHIPS Program direct funding agreement with Bosch to support domestic production of silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductors. Bosch is building out U.S. SiC capacity at a time when the automotive and industrial sectors are rapidly shifting power electronics to the material.
Bosch's $225M CHIPS Award for Silicon Carbide Puts Wolfspeed and Onsemi on Notice
Federal money flows to a private German giant — but the real trade is in the U.S.-listed rivals it threatens.

Bosch just got $225 million in federal backing to compete in the same SiC market where Wolfspeed and Onsemi are fighting for survival.
Who cashes in: Bosch is private and German, so there's no direct ticker play. The closest U.S.-listed proxy for SiC demand is Wolfspeed (WOLF), which is the dominant U.S. pure-play SiC wafer and device maker — federal investment in domestic SiC manufacturing validates the entire supply chain and could pull Wolfspeed into conversations about future CHIPS awards of its own. II-VI / Coherent (COHR) also has SiC substrate exposure and benefits from any signal that Washington is treating the material as strategically critical. Equipment suppliers like Entegris (ENTG) and Axcelis Technologies (ACLS), which sell process gear into SiC fabs, see incremental demand whenever a new SiC line gets funded.
Who's exposed: Wolfspeed is a double-edged story here. A better-capitalized Bosch with federal subsidy backing becomes a more formidable competitor in the SiC device market, particularly for automotive customers. Onsemi (ON), which has been aggressively marketing its own SiC platform to EV makers, faces a rival that just got a $225 million cost advantage courtesy of U.S. taxpayers. Neither Wolfspeed nor Onsemi is destroyed by this, but their pricing power in long-term supply agreements gets squeezed.
What to watch: Whether Wolfspeed — currently burning cash and restructuring — uses the Bosch award as leverage to accelerate its own CHIPS application or partnership talks. If Wolfspeed lands comparable federal support, the competitive threat narrows considerably.
