NRC Approves NAC MAGNASTOR Spent Fuel Storage Cask

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission confirmed the effective date of September 14, 2026, for amendments to the NAC MAGNASTOR System listing in the approved spent fuel storage casks database, including Amendment Nos. 16 and 17.

U.S. nuclear utilities gain a new storage option, reducing regulatory delays and extending reactor economics.

NAC International (private, German-owned subsidiary of Gesellschaft für Nuklear-Behälter) manufactures the MAGNASTOR system. The company is not U.S.-listed. However, the approval benefits U.S. nuclear utilities that operate reactors and need compliant storage solutions. Duke Energy DUK, Southern Company SO, Exelon (EXC), and FirstEnergy (FE) all operate nuclear fleets and will benefit from expanded storage options, reducing regulatory delays and capex uncertainty. The approval also indirectly supports Cameco CCJ, a uranium producer, by extending the economic life of existing reactors.

No clear loser. Competitors in the spent fuel storage market (e.g., Holtec International, also private) face no new regulatory threat; this is an expansion of approved options, not a replacement.

Watch for utility capex guidance updates and whether utilities announce procurement plans for MAGNASTOR systems.
