NATO's Spending Surge Is Real and Getting Enforced — RTX, Lockheed, and AeroVironment Are the Direct Beneficiaries

Five NATO members already hit 3.5% of GDP on defense; Trump is pressing the rest, and U.S. primes collect the orders.

Five NATO members have already reached the 3.5% of GDP defense spending target, nearly a decade ahead of schedule, and the Trump administration is using a summit in Turkey to press remaining allies to accelerate commitments. Total NATO defense spending is tracking toward $1.5 trillion annually.

RTX's Patriot systems and AMRAAM missiles are the first items on every NATO ally's restocking list — the spending surge is already in their backlog.

Who cashes in: RTX RTX is the most direct beneficiary of European and allied restocking — its Patriot air-defense systems and AMRAAM missiles are the first items on every NATO ally's shopping list. Lockheed Martin LMT collects on F-35 orders, HIMARS, and Javelin restocking as allies rebuild inventories. AeroVironment AVAV makes the Switchblade loitering munition and small tactical drones that have become standard procurement items for NATO members studying the Ukraine conflict. General Dynamics GD benefits through its combat vehicle lines. These are not speculative — foreign military sales pipelines are already funded and in backlog for all four companies. L3Harris LHX picks up on electronic warfare and tactical communications upgrades that accompany any force modernization.

Who's exposed: There is no obvious U.S.-listed loser from higher NATO spending. The risk is execution: shipbuilding and munitions production capacity is constrained, meaning higher orders don't immediately translate to higher revenue if supply chains can't keep up. Huntington Ingalls HII and General Dynamics' shipbuilding division face this bottleneck most acutely.

What to watch next: The specific foreign military sale notifications published by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency in the weeks after the Turkey summit. Each notification is a dollar figure attached to a specific prime contractor.
