NASA Awards Sierra Lobo $77M for Space Reactor

Contractor lands dual contracts for nuclear power conversion systems on lunar missions.

NASA has awarded Sierra Lobo Inc two contracts totaling $75.7 million for power conversion systems on the Space Reactor-1 Freedom nuclear power module, effective August 28, 2026. The awards (DO-14-304 and DO-14-305) support the agency's effort to deploy nuclear power on the Moon.

NASA's lunar nuclear power push locks in $77M for Sierra Lobo and validates space reactors as mission-critical.

Sierra Lobo (private) wins the direct award. The company specializes in aerospace systems and is now a key supplier for NASA's lunar nuclear initiative. This is a decade-long program with multiple phases, so the contract is a beachhead for future work.

Lockheed Martin (LMT) and Northrop Grumman (NOC), the prime contractors for lunar landers and systems, benefit indirectly. NASA's commitment to space nuclear power increases the value of their lunar contracts. Intuitive Machines (LUNR), a commercial lunar-lander operator, also benefits if it wins NASA lunar cargo missions powered by these reactors.

No public company loses directly, though traditional solar-powered lunar systems face reduced demand if nuclear becomes the standard.
