On September 3, 2026, the FDA announced a request for information (RFI) on opportunities to advance botanical drug development as part of the Trump administration's push to modernize regulatory frameworks. Botanical products—derived from plants, algae, or fungi—face unique complexity in research and standardization, and the FDA is seeking input on how to streamline review.

Streamlined botanical-drug pathways could let small-cap supplement makers like NATR move products into the prescription channel.
The winners are botanical-extract and natural-products companies that have struggled with FDA's traditional drug-development pathway. Gaia Herbs (private), Herb Pharm (private), and Traditional Medicinals (private) are not public, but Nutraceutical International Corporation (NUTR) and Nature's Sunshine Products (NATR) are small-cap, U.S.-listed players in the botanical and supplement space. If the FDA creates a faster, more predictable pathway for botanical drugs, these companies could move products from supplements into the drug channel, unlocking higher margins and broader distribution.
The risk is to pharma incumbents if botanical drugs become easier to approve and market—they could cannibalize prescription-drug sales in certain therapeutic areas (e.g., anxiety, sleep, digestion). However, the addressable market is small enough that major pharma is unlikely to be materially threatened.
Watch for the FDA's response to the RFI in Q4 2026 or Q1 2027. Any proposed guidance on botanical-drug classification or expedited review will signal whether this is real policy or symbolic.
