The U.S. Department of Commerce finalized a $225 million CHIPS Act direct funding agreement with Bosch to support a $2 billion investment in silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductor manufacturing in Roseville, California. SiC chips are critical for electric vehicle power electronics, industrial motors, and renewable energy inverters.
Bosch's $225M CHIPS Award for Silicon Carbide Chips Is a Direct Threat to Wolfspeed's U.S. Market Share
Federal money is funding a new SiC competitor in Roseville — and Wolfspeed is already bleeding.

The federal government just handed Bosch $225 million to build the SiC capacity that Wolfspeed desperately needed for itself.
Who cashes in: Bosch is private (German), so the direct subsidy doesn't flow to a U.S. stock. But the Roseville facility will need U.S.-based equipment, materials, and construction. Applied Materials AMAT and Lam Research LRCX supply the deposition and etch tools used in SiC fabs — more domestic SiC capacity means more tool orders regardless of who owns the fab. Axcelis Technologies (ACLS) is a smaller, more levered play: it dominates ion implantation equipment specifically for SiC wafer processing, and every new SiC fab line is a near-certain Axcelis customer. On the materials side, II-VI / Coherent (COHR) supplies SiC substrates and stands to benefit from rising domestic demand.
Who's exposed: Wolfspeed (WOLF) is the most direct casualty. It is the largest U.S.-listed pure-play SiC chipmaker, already struggling with a debt-heavy balance sheet and slow EV demand. A federally subsidized Bosch SiC fab in California adds a well-capitalized competitor to a market Wolfspeed has been counting on to justify its capital spending. ON Semiconductor (ON) and STMicroelectronics (STM) also compete in SiC power devices and face the same incremental supply pressure, though both are more diversified than Wolfspeed.
Watch Wolfspeed's next earnings call for any commentary on pricing pressure or customer contract renewals. If Bosch starts signing EV supply agreements with automakers that were previously Wolfspeed customers, the thesis accelerates.
